Using Scraps: The Mariposa Top and Pomona Pants

Today’s make is brought to you from my scrap bin. What you’re about to see is made out of my remnants and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.

The first make is the new pattern from Lysimaque Sew. It’s called the mariposa top and I absolutely love it. It’s the cutest top with options for ruffles around the neckline and upper bust that goes all around the sleeves and back. For my version I opted just for the ruffles at the neckline and I also chose the short sleeve option. I used two linens (one from Ellie Whittaker Studio and the other from NYC garment district)  I had used for two other projects so when I was putting those remnants away I had them on top of each other and thought, “these will look great together”. I just cut the pattern pieces according to how much I had. It turned out really well and I love the amount of ease the pattern has. It’s just light and flowy making it perfect for the summer heat. The only thing I will change next time is how fast I finish the neckline. I rushed it when I initially did it and realised I didn’t catch all the raw edges. Who knows how I missed that. So I had to redo that part. Aside from that the pattern came together super fast. Like really fast.

Now that I had made my top I was so excited to pair it up with a bottom but after looking through my wardrobe I couldn’t find anything that worked well with it. So back down to my sewing room I went and I found some left over from a sun hat I made. This amazing pink denim I had picked up from Salt Lake Sewciety. It took a little tetris but I got all the pattern pieces to fit with the pomona pant pattern from Anna Allen. I really wanted to elevate the look so I decided to add topstitching as I went. This was a great idea because I cannot tell you how many times people have asked me where they are from. They work really well in this heavier weight denim with the topstitching. Granted it took longer to sew up but it’s so worth it.

I love wearing these two makes together but you can see from the pictures that I also wear the shorts with just basic tees and it works great. I can’t recommend using your remnants enough. There’s just something magical about using every last bit and creating something new. Be sure to check out these patterns if you have some scraps laying around.
