The Partner Overalls Hack by Ready To Sew

It’s Summer and when it’s Summer I tend to unconsciously pick a theme for my makes. The theme so far has been overalls. I’m not sure what prompted this but I am not disappointed in the choice. I’ve made two pairs so far and I have a third on the way. I wonder if it’s installing the hardware that’s got me all excited. I’ve never done that before and since I did my first set I’m hooked! So let’s talk about what pattern I used and all the fun things I learnt along the way.

After looking through pages and pages of patterns I landed on using the Partner Overalls from Ready to sew. The feature that really stood out to me was the drawstring waist. I love overalls and I love the utility look but there have been times where I wished there was a little more definition in the waist. This feature definitely solved that problem. I also enjoyed the paneling on the front legs. That really drew me in after seeing this on Rudy Jude jeans that everyone seems to own. The last feature that sealed the deal for me was the option of elastic on the back of the straps. One of the biggest issues I had encountered growing up and wearing overalls was mobility. When I bend over it would feel tight on my broad shoulders which I feel totally goes against the utility of overalls. So when I saw the elastic I just knew it would remedy this problem. I should add that I purchased this pattern plus the expansion pack.

Now that I had this pattern on hand it was time to decide on fabrics. The first set I made is glorious but I hadn’t taken pictures yet so you’ll have to wait for those. These are my second pair. I decided to make them short for Summer and I just felt that suited this amazing fabric from Ellie Whittaker Studio. This is one of her best selling fabrics called Mushy. She brought it out in a new substrate: Cotton Canvas. I was so excited because finding this bright and vibrant cotton canvas is so, so hard. The weight of this as well is like a perfect medium weight. So not the heavy weight that feels like every needle is going to break and not the light weight where my glorious thighs are going to rub a hole straight through them.

Let’s talk about the sewing aspect. It was uneventful. Everything went as intended. The only difference was my eyeballing the length of the legs. It ended up being too long by like 6” so I cut it down. BUT, I do not recommend doing this. I had to do the tiniest hem known to man so it wouldn’t warp the hem weird. Don’t be like me and actually draft your pattern pieces ahead of time if you plan on shortening it.

Overall, I truly love this make. I wore it out on a day when I was feeling low and I was stopped by so many people asking about where I bought it or where the fabric was from. So I’d say that was a win and also a huge hug from the universe on a day that I needed it.  I also wore it for the next 3 days and I’m not sorry about it. It’s the perfect piece for Summer and now I’m all excited to show you my others when I get my butt into line and actually take photos of it.
