The Finch Button Up by Common Stitch

We’re moving away from women’s clothing and focusing on menswear today. This is something I know nothing about but was willing to give it a go for the hubby.

We had a trip to Hawaii coming up for my husband’s work. He doesn’t usually request makes from me but he came into my sewing room and asked very sheepishly if I could make him a cool shirt for Hawaii. Now not many people know this but my husband dresses better than me. So for him to ask for something is a big deal in itself and pushes my anxiety through the roof because I want it to be as perfect as he is. I said yes and told him to go through my fabric tubs to find the fabric he wanted. After perusing my endless stash he landed on a gorgeous print called Birdies from Ellie Whittaker Studio in 100% organic linen.

Let’s talk about this linen. It’s so unbelievably soft. So soft that I was concerned with how I was going to keep it straight when sewing! I’m kidding but you get the idea of how soft it actually is! Now for the pattern I gave him a short list and asked him to pick his favourite. He landed on the finch button up from Common Stitch.

From there it was pretty uneventful which is just how I like it. I made two alterations and that’s it. I shortened the shirt by 3” as my sweet guy is a short king. And the last alteration isn’t really an alteration. He asked me to fold up his sleeve hems and tack it down. Such a small change with maximum reward. It looked way more modern and a total vibe once I did that.

Overall this pattern was a great make. Came together really easily and can you believe I squished it out of 1.5m! Super stoked with it and the hubby got so many compliments in Hawaii. Even his bosses boss asked if he could get one! The thing that mattered most to me is that my husband liked it and he did. He’s worn it all Summer so far, so it’s safe to say it’s a wardrobe staple.
