Pattern Review: McCall’s 7899

Firstly I need to speak about Mind the Maker fabric. I have lusted for fabric from this brand for ages. Every time I’ve seen someone make something from their fabric it just looks so high fashion, so clearly this is magical fabric and no one can convince me otherwise. So when I received my viscose challis spot fabric I was beside myself. It truly is incredible fabric. Saying it’s soft doesn’t even cut it. The texture is nothing I’ve ever felt before. It’s textured, beautiful drape and yet the perfect composition of light and medium weight. Like the perfect inbetween. My husband actually kept touching it and asked that I just keep it for him to touch and wrap himself up in. So if that isn’t a testament to it’s amazing nature then I don’t know what is.

Once I managed to get my fabric back from my husband it was time to make something incredible. I was tossing up so many patterns but definitely knew I was going to make a blouse. I had previously mentioned on another post that I was dangerously low on blouses so it was time to make another to help fill the void. After considering another roscoe top I landed on another pattern I had had in my stash for a while. A McCall’s pattern 7899 in view C. I was a little concerned because the size range is limited like most of the patterns from the big 4 but I figured there was enough ease for me to squeeze into it. I ended up making the size 20 and it worked great for me. Almost perfect you could say. I chose this view due to the pintuck detailing on the sleeves. I felt like that detail would elevate this fabric even further. Boy was I not wrong!

The sewing was all straight forward. The view I chose involved a little more concentration due to the pin tucks on the upper sleeve. I actually took out my carbon paper to make sure I got it exact. It had been a little bit since I had used carbon paper to transfer markings but it was necessary for this view; however, once that portion was done the rest of the make was simple.

This pattern is classed as an easy pattern and I really cannot recommend it enough. It was such minimal sewing for such an impactful make. It really did end up looking like a high fashion garment and I cannot get over that I made it. Does that ever happen to you? When you make something that’s so good that you don’t believe you made it? Well that’s what happened with this make. Since I’ve worn it too I’ve had some people ask me where I got it, which is pretty amazing considering we’re in a pandemic and nobody really stops you to ask those questions unless they really want to!

I love my new blouse and it turned out better than I could have ever hoped. I know this is going to be one of those makes, moving forward, that people won’t believe I made and that makes me even more happy! Oh and if I didn’t mention this enough, get some Mind the Maker fabric, you will not be disappointed!
