The Penny Pinafore
Today I’ll be sharing a short review of the new Penny Overall pattern from Sew Liberated. It’s another fabulous collaboration with Speck and Keepings and again it did not disappoint.
If you’ve made the Otis Overalls then you’re in for a treat. The Penny is actually an easier make. The construction is similar and the finishes too, but it’s not as involved as the Otis overalls. Everything is french seamed once again with the exception of the facing that is hand stitched down.
I cannot remember the last time I sewed a godet, but that’s a section in the back part of the skirt. Once you sew the godet to the back and the back panels (which then becomes the whole back piece) everything is smooth sailing from there. I would recommend two sections to look out for: attaching the back panels to the godet and checking the length of your shoulder straps. When attaching the back panels you want to make sure that the top of the godet lines up with the back panel and is neat once you french seam. With your straps, you want to make sure they are the right length for you before you hand stitch your facing down. Aside from that, everything else comes together nice and quick.
I decided to style my Penny with a streetwear vibe. I made a roscoe dress without the bottom frill and put the opening on the back not at the front to have a gathered neckline on the front. I also took out the good old Doc Marten’s to finish the look. These overalls are beyond comfortable and I especially love the back tie to make it more adjustable for the backside which I appreciate so much. I made the size 22 but will mostly like size down one or two sizes for my next make!
