Collage Gather Top from Matchy Matchy Sewing Club

I cannot remember the time that I didn’t have any sewing commitments so I was able to buy, print and sew up a new pattern a day after it was released. This new-to-me company was all over my feed with all the glorious versions of their new pattern. The pattern is called the Collage Gather Top. It’s all about using remnants and I am really riding that train lately. The company is fairly new from what I’m seeing but they are well loved with the two patterns they have. I decided to give it a go and I was not disappointed.

The collage gather top has two views on offer and I went with making the short sleeve view. I raided my scrap bin and pulled out all my linens from there and whittled it down to 5 colours. I wasn’t sure how it was going to go but my gut was saying do it. Four linens are from Blackbird fabrics and one from Salt Lake Sewciety.

Since I bought this pattern on the day of release I printed the pattern at home. It was pretty fast to tape together since it is a top and a short sleeve version. That took me about 40 mins and then from there I was able to go straight into cutting which was another 30 with the kids running around me.

After that the sewing began. I was not expecting the top to come together as fast and as easily as it did. The only confusing part I encountered was self-inflicted: I was using linen with no obvious right/wrong side. I recommend marking your pattern pieces clearly if you’re using fabrics with no obvious right and wrong sides. Aside from that, the instructions are very clear and thorough. There was only one alteration I made and that was to the opening of the arm. I took my measurements and thought it would be a little snug around my bicep so I added ¾” to the back and front pieces where the underarm is sewn. I also went ahead and added that to my cuff piece as well. It worked a treat and I had no issues after I made that alteration.

I really love this pattern and congratulate Matchy Matchy Sewing Club on such a good pattern. I’ve already made another from more scraps and I just love how it sits on me. I will note for those that prefer a little longer length to pay attention to where you want it to sit. I wear high waisted pants so this length of top works for me even with my larger bust but I know that’s not always everyone’s preference to be on the more cropped size. I’m also only 5’4” so if you’re tall be mindful of the length!
